.:. Implementing the Conference Theme
All-Academy Sessions. Each year there are several All-Academy sessions that address topics directly related to the conference theme. Do you have some great ideas you would like to express in a symposium? Anyone with proposals for All-Academy sessions that address the theme “Creating Actionable Knowledge” should communicate them in writing to the All-Academy Program Chair, Larry Greiner ( lgreiner@marshall.usc.edu) no later than November 14, 2003 . These communications need not be full-fledged proposals; a description of the session's content, format, and participants will be adequate. If deemed acceptable, a full proposal needs to be submitted to Larry by January 16, 2004 . More information about how to do this is available in the “Submission Guidelines” section.
Division/Interest Group Theme Session. Barring a shortage of hotel/convention meeting space, we plan to continue the tradition of giving each division/interest group time for a theme-related session. Each division is free to accomplish this in any format or forum.
AcademyArts. Now in its 5th year, AcademyArts provides members a venue for creative expressions of art, poetry, and performance. In 2004, AcademyArts will collaborate with ACORN and The Fringe Café to provide an exciting setting for both exhibition and performance. Poetry (e.g. “verbal” expressions) and visual arts (e.g., painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, etc) will be displayed on standard easels and pedestals. Performing art will be scheduled as part of the Fringe Café. Due to space and resource constraints, the Academy is unable to provide audiovisual technology, special security, or extra-cost items.
We encourage you to submit works for the refereed AcademyArts exhibit. Drawing on the conference theme is desirable, but not strictly necessary. We do however challenge you to “create actionable knowledge” and to explore how creative artistic processes play a role in its creation. The 2004 AcademyArts Chair is Chris Poulson (cfpoulson@csupomona.edu). The deadline for submissions is January 5, 2004 .
“ I came in for a cup of coffee, but ended up changing the world… mine at least.” -- 2003 Fringe Café patron.Fringe Café. One of the major challenges we face every year at the Academy is creating time and space for innovative dialogue and participation. The AoM is again sponsoring the Fringe Café — where conversations highlight the menu. Our intent is to create a fun, innovative, intimate, and open space that helps facilitate authentic dialogue. Relative to the AoM theme, we hope to create actionable knowledge in informal and spontaneous, yet meaningful and pragmatic ways. Along with providing space for these interactions, there will be a number of specially hosted events, but we also welcome your participation on conversations or events we should have. If you have comments, or interesting ideas on an event you would like to propose, please contact the Fringe Organizing Committee through Hans Hansen (Hans.Hansen@vuw.ac.nz).
