AOM 2005 BPS Division
Professional Development Workshops:
Call for Proposals
Business Policy & Strategy (BPS) encourages submissions
of creative proposals for PDW sessions (scheduled between
Friday 1pm and Sunday noon, 8/5/05-8/7/05). Our goal is to
make the PDW sessions more interactive than in the past.
PDWs are not intended to be just another form of symposia.
Rather, they should produce more in-depth analysis,
discussion, and interaction. It is an opportunity to
experiment with new models and ideas for sessions that might
not fit within the confines of the regular program.
One example of a
recent experiment is the game of Strategy Jeopardy that
Wally Ferrier and Tammy Madson developed for their session,
Conversations on Business and Competitive Strategy Research
(see
www.bus.emory.edu/RCoff/bps/StrategyJeopardy.xls). In
that game, audience members chose pairs of scholars who had
to answer questions in a point/counterpoint fashion. The
audience then discussed the question and the scholars’
responses. This format was used for about 1/3 of the PDW.
While all PDWs need not involve games, they should all
involve the audience...
The form for proposals can be found online at:
www.bus.emory.edu/RCoff/bps/pdw_proposalform05.doc.
Please complete the form and submit it to:
bps@bus.emory.edu by November 15th 2004. Note
that there is limited space on the PDW program and we cannot
guarantee that all proposals will be accepted. Some BPS
division PDW programs (consortia, etc.) are planned well in
advance of the submission deadline for the regular Academy
Meeting and take priority in scheduling. All PDW
participants must commit to participation in advance by
signing a consent form.

AOM 2005 Careers Division Professional
Development Workshops: Call for Proposals
Careers PD
workshops are creative and action-oriented with the overall aim
of helping each other to enrich our teaching and research
practice and our own careers. We particularly welcome proposals
with innovative workshop design for maximum participation. As we
will be in Honolulu you might want to think of proposals that
imaginatively merge career concepts with the physical and
cultural features of the setting. The images of volcanoes,
beaches, surf may inspire sessions on career resurgence or
rebirth, on the power and unpredictability of careers, or on
what we can learn from less conventional career patterns.
You might want to include sessions which take us out into the
landscape or sessions based on song, theatre or dance. The cross
cultural nature of the population may inspire ideas for
workshops around identity and work. As a vacation destination
Honolulu might be an appropriate setting for sessions on
work-life balance or personal career/life management, including
managing our own academic careers. A workshop on new (or
different) methods for career research may also be welcomed.
Submissions need to use the template at
http://hrm.massey.ac.nz/211.html
The closing date for submissions is November
15th. Please feel free to suggest partnerships
with other divisions by marking the appropriate boxes on the
template.

AOM 2005 CMS Division Professional
Development Workshops: Call for Proposals
The Critical Management Studies (CMS)
Interest Group welcomes suggestions, offers of contributions
and formal proposals for its 2005 PDW.
We particularly encourage ideas which
acknowledge the location and theme of this year’s
conference, and which foster professional development in
reflecting on global issues past and present, empire(s)
to globalization(s) and the local engagements with them of
managers, management, and of critical communities.
We also are keen as part of the PDW to
foster engagements with specific managerial disciplines and
subdisciplines, to enter into dialogues with other divisions
and interest groups, and not least to submit ourselves to
the critical gaze that we let play on others.
Finally, we recognize the importance of professional
development in its traditional sense, and would love to hear
suggestions about sharing emergent ideas and methodologies
in Critical Management Studies, about approaches to its
teaching, and about work and career issues for doctoral,
early career and more established faculty, and indeed for
non-academic sympathizers with CMS.
Please feel free to come up with and suggest ideas even if
they fall short of a formal proposal – particularly if your
previous engagement with CMS IG and its PDW’s have been
limited – we are always keen to hear new and different
perspectives.
Although there is a deadline of October 29 2004 for formal
proposals, submitted directly to Bill Cooke, please do
contact him with suggestions and ideas at any level of
development, on
cooke.cmsig@umist.ac.uk beforehand (the sooner the
better).
Formal proposals should include:
-
title,
-
description of the workshop and activities
-
a very brief indication of its relevance to CMS
-
time requirements of the workshop (v)submitter
(contact person) and Presenter(s) information, including
name, affiliation, address, phone, fax, and e-mail for each
person(vi) other division/Interest Groups which migh
co-sponsors and why. But you are advised to contact
Bill Cooke before you get to this stage.

AOM 2005 GDO Division
Professional Development Workshops:
Call for Proposals
In accordance with the theme of this
year’s meeting, Gender and Diversity in Organization (GDO)
is soliciting ideas for professional development workshops
that will help us develop “A New Vision … in the 21st
century.” While the conference theme focuses
explicitly on a new vision of “management,” we are
interested in extending this new vision to all aspects of
organizations that have relevance for GDO, as well as to GDO
itself. Whereas in New Orleans we looked backward as
we celebrated our 20th
anniversary, in Honolulu we will look forward as we
celebrate our 21st birthday.
Innovative sessions will be particularly
welcomed, as will those that are co-sponsored by two or more
divisions or interest groups. You can look at the 2004
conference program to help you generate ideas or toss it
aside and begin thinking truly ‘outside the box.’ Such
ideas might include using Hawaiian history and culture
(e.g., hula, surfing, volcanoes, Pearl Harbor) to explore
issues of research, teaching, and practice relevant to GDO
members.
If you have ideas about these or other
topics, I encourage you to work with colleagues to develop
and submit a proposal for a PDW session. The PDW
format is flexible, and GDO members are welcoming.
PDWs provide the opportunity to try or explore something
you've considered, to develop and discuss ideas with
similarly or dissimilarly minded colleagues, and to grow and
share in your diversity learning.
The submission deadline is 11/15/04, but
earlier submissions are encouraged. If you'd like to
discuss an idea before submission, please send an e-mail to

AOM 2005 HR Division
Professional Development Workshops:
Call for Proposals
The Human Resource (HR) Division is
dedicated to a better understanding of how work
organizations can perform more effectively by better
management of their human resources. We are also
dedicated to improving the effectiveness of our HR Division
members, and for that we rely heavily on the professional
development workshops at the annual Academy of Management
Meeting. In order to make these workshops most useful,
we encourage all members of the division to consider
submitting a proposal about a topic that sparks their
interest. These topics can span a wide range of issues
including: Teaching (e.g., HR topics you would like to
know more; innovative methods; action research);
International (e.g., geographical influences on HR
practices; HR challenges across cultures; unique approaches
to HR); Professional Development (e.g., career transitions;
new research methodologies; work-life balance issues).
We are seeking interactive workshops
that are based on active, engaged learning, and submitters
should be innovative in workshop design. There are
many possibilities for PDW formats, including workshops,
tutorials, consortia, panels, debates and guest speakers.
Please refer to the HR Division’s web site (http://www.hrdiv.org)
for the HR Division’s specific proposal submission form.
If you don’t have the time or
interest to develop a full workshop, at least pass along
your suggestions for topics that we might help arrange a
workshop around. For more information about the
proposal specifications and due date, please contact Amy
Kristof-Brown, HR Division Workshop Co-chair at
amy-kristof-brown@uiowa.edu ; alternatively, Amy can be
reached at 319-335-0928. The due date for proposals is

AOM 2005 IM Division Professional
Development Workshops: Call for Proposals
The International Management Division (IM)
is dedicated to research and teaching pertaining to the
theory and practice of cross-border or cross-cultural
management. Our focus in the Professional Development Workshops
(PDW) is on the development, enhancement and creation of
professional and personal skills associated with international
scholarship, research and teaching. With this in mind, we
are looking for innovative, provocative and exciting proposals
that bring together an international community of scholars
interested in enhancing international business and management
scholarship.
This year we are particularly interested
in expanding the PDW series to include training and discussion
in the areas of international governance, international social
responsibility, security issues, socio-economic integration and
advanced research methods. In addition we encourage
proposals that involve not just other divisions but also groups
outside our normal mainstream; such as corporations,
consultancies, NGOs and public sector organizations. We
will also, of course, be offering doctoral and junior faculty
consortia—this year headed up by Andrew Delios of Singapore
National University and Lorraine Eden of Texas A&M,
respectively.
It is suggested that those interested in
organizing a PSW session, or just being involved, should contact
Timothy Devinney at BOTH of the email addresses
given above (IMD_PDW@agsm.edu.au
and
T.Devinney@agsm.edu.au) before submitting a detailed proposal.
By adopting this process, we hope to avoid duplication of effort
and to maximize our ability to integrate our proposals into a
coherent program with the other divisions. The initial
deadline for expressions of interest is October 1; however you
are strongly encouraged to be earlier rather than later as we
will be developing the program on a rolling basis. Those
wishing to know more about the IM Division are encouraged to
visit our website at
http://divisions.aomonline.org/im/ .

Professional Development Workshops:
Call for Proposals
"A New Vision of Management in the 21st Century"
is the theme for the 2005 AOM conference. Please

AOM 2005 OCIS Division Professional
Development Workshops: Call for Proposals
Deadline for Submissions: November 8,
2004
Proposals are invited for the pre-conference professional
development workshops (PDW) to be held at the upcoming
Academy of Management Meeting in Honolulu. The theme of the
2005 AOM conference is “A New Vision of Management in the
21st Century” and the OCIS Division will accommodate this
theme during the PDW, with an emphasis on with on the use,
management, value, or role of organizational communications
or information technologies in supporting a new vision of
management for the 21st century.
Professional Development Workshops are scheduled between 1
PM August 5 (Friday) and Noon August 7, 2005 (Sunday). The
PDW portion of the AOM is an opportunity to be innovative,
to discuss questions that are unresolved, to share best
practices in teaching, scholarship, research, and practical
application of ideas, to go outside the conference hotel and
explore “live case experiences,” to discuss and debate, and
to organize the kind of novel sessions that you always
wished you could attend at the Academy.
PDW sessions can take a number of forms: workshop, invited
speaker, panel discussion, town hall meeting, debate, tour,
keynote address, reception, etc. For instance, both
the Junior Faculty and Doctoral Consortium are
OCIS-sponsored PDWs that will be held on Saturday, August 6,

Schultze (uschultz@mail.cox.smu.edu),
by no later than Nov. 8, 2004. However, we encourage
organizers to contact the PDW Chair by early October so that
we can work with you to develop a successful submission.
Proposals will be evaluated according to their ability to
draw an audience (esp. OCIS members), as well as the
criteria listed above (e.g., fit with conference theme,
innovative, cross-divisional, etc).
If you are unable to submit your proposal via email, please
fax or mail your proposal (in time for it to reach its
destination by Nov. 8) to Ulrike Schultze at the address
above.

AOM 2005 PNP Division Professional Development Workshops:
Call for Proposals
The Public and Nonprofit Division
(PNP) encourages creative proposals for PDW sessions that would advance
professional development knowledge at the 2005 Annual Conference in
Honolulu. These sessions are
scheduled between Friday
1 p.m. (8/5/05)
and Sunday
noon (8/7/05).
We seek PDW topics that link to the Conference theme of "A New Vision of
Management in the 21st Century". We are exploring a number of topics
including: tips for increasing survey response rates, a joint effort with HCM
division of health care delivery, service-learning programs at the undergraduate
and graduate levels, a workshop on developing and writing cases, and
conversations on executive development in non-profit organizations, but we
welcome other session ideas and feedback. These sessions can take a number of
formats: workshop, interactive panels, skits, debates, and tours -- in either a
traditional or nontraditional format.
Collaborations between
practitioners and academics are particularly welcome to build upon each other's
strengths. Both a Junior Faculty
Consortium and a Doctoral Consortium are planned. We also encourage designing
sessions that other divisions may want to co-sponsor and/or co-organizer. One
thought may be to develop a session with IM division on conversations on
management of international non-profit organizations (NGOs). These are
challenging times for those in public and nonprofit organizations. This adds to
the criticality of holding successful PNP PDW sessions.
Please submit your PDW proposal,
including the name of the organizer(s) (with affiliation, mail, phone, etc.) its
title, brief description of the session, the expected outcomes to the
participants, desired time required, preferred date and time, anticipated target
audience, room layout suggested, and A/V needs.
The deadline for proposals is
Nov 15, 2004.
Please submit the above information to the PNP PDW Chair: Dean F. Eitel at
deitel@depaul.edu. Thank you for your
active assistance to make the
Honolulu Conference a success.

AOM 2005 RM Division
Professional Development Workshops:
Call for Proposals
The Research
Methods Division (RMD), one of the Academy's most active divisions, invites
submissions for professional development workshops (PDWs) at
the 2005 Annual Meeting in Honolulu. PDW Sessions will
be held at Honolulu conference between August 5th
and 7th, 2005.
RMD is looking for
innovative and challenging workshops in quantitative and
qualitative methodologies that will attract not just members
of RMD, but members from a wider audience as well. The
proposed PDW should seek to advance the professional
development of RMD and Academy members by discussing state
of the art research methodologies. Please submit
relevant information (i.e., Title, Abstract, Panelists/
Participants, and Key Words) to
rmdpdw@okstate.edu by November 15, 2004. You are
welcome to discuss potential PDWs with me before submitting
your proposal.
In addition to the
PDWs that have been offered in previous years, RMD will
continue last year’s delivery of a Mini-Lecture Series on
specific methodological issues and techniques. The
target participants will be PhD students and junior faculty
members who want to learn more about specific qualitative
and quantitative methodological topics.
A seminar format
will be used and with each session lasting from 2 to 2 ˝
hours. If you think you can help in teaching one or
more of the lectures, please send me an e-mail at
rmdpdw@okstate.edu to inform me of the topic that you
want to teach and the expected number of hours/sessions
required. RMD will provide close support and logistics
for these mini-lectures.
If you want to
know more about RMD, please visit the RMDWeb at

AOM 2005 SIM Division
Professional Development Workshops:
Call for Proposals
In the PDW program, Social Issue in
Management (SIM) hopes to stress the overall 2005 AOM "A New
Vision of Management in the 21st Century" theme. In
SIM as elsewhere, PDWs create forums for colleagues to share
knowledge and expertise. They have at least two
advantages over regular academy sessions in that they allow
longer time frames and more interactive/participative
formats.
PDW proposals that are co-sponsored by
several divisions or interest groups are encouraged.
If you wish to submit a proposal for a
PDW session to be sponsored by the SIM division please make
sure that your proposal includes:
-
The title of the workshop.
-
A full description of the workshop and
activities it contains
-
Time requirements of the workshop
-
Submitter (contact person) and Presenter(s) information, including name, affiliation,
address, phone, fax, and e-mail for each person.
-
Any additional Division/Interest group
sponsors being solicited, if any, and the rationale for
doing so.
Please send your proposal to Tom
Donaldson at SIM_Business@wharton.upenn.edu by November 15.

AOM 2005 TIM Division
Professional Development Workshops:
Call for Proposals
The TIM Division is looking for bold, interesting,
provocative (you get
the idea...) proposals for the pre-conference activities at
the Academy
of Management Meetings in Honolulu. PDWs take place on
the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday leading up to the
conference. The proposals can be for any type of session
related to our area. Many sessions in the past
concerned helping the members of the Division, with
tutorials, reviews
of the latest research or methods, and panels on topics of
interest to
the membership. We welcome such proposals, as well as
joint sessions
with other divisions and proposals for unusual, provocative,
or
controversial topics (related to TIM, of course!).
As TIM Division PDW Chair for the 2005 conference on the
theme "A New
Vision of Management in the 21st Century," I invite you to
submit a
proposal for a PDW. All proposals must be submitted via
email (aomtimpdw@wharton.upenn.edu)
as soon as possible, but no later than November 15, 2004.
Please email your proposal -- do not use regular mail.
Proposals will be selected on the basis of their 1)
innovativeness, 2)
currency and relevance to the division, and/or 3)
connection to the overall conference theme.
The proposal should include the following information in a
1-2 page memo:
-
Organizer's name, affiliation,
address, phone/fax, and email
-
Session title
-
An outline of the
proposed session, including a statement of planned
activities, rationale for the workshop, and the target
audience.
-
Proposed day (Fri., Sat., Sun) and
time (from Friday 1 pm to Sunday noon), and estimated
running time (sessions typically run anywhere between 2 and
4 hours)
-
Policy regarding participation (e.g.,
pre-registration, by invitation, no restriction).
-
Information on all facilitators:
name, affiliation, address,
phone/fax, and email.
-
Suggestions for co-sponsoring
divisions or interest groups.
-
Ideal room setup, including food and
audiovisual requirements.
Historically, proposals that can be co-sponsored by multiple
divisions are more likely to be accepted. In addition,
the earlier your proposal is submitted, the easier it is to
obtain your preferred date and time. All organizers
will be informed of PDW decisions no later than December 10,
2004. |

Asia Academy of Management
Professional Development Workshops:
Call for Proposals
Following what we have been doing in the
past few years, the 2005 Asia Academy PDW will focus on the
sharing of knowledge and expertise and fostering the
development of research in Asian management. Unlike
regular paper-presentation sessions, the PDW will be
conducted in a more interactive/participative format.
We encourage members to submit proposals that focus on
contemporary issues in Asian management, research methods,
and professional development topics. We are seeking
innovative workshop ideas that would enhance participants'
interest,
understanding, and collaboration in doing
Asian management research.

Teaching Theme Committee Professional
Development Workshops: Call
for Proposals
Drawing
upon the theme of this year's conference, "A New Vision of
Management in the 21st Century," the Teaching Theme
Committee (TTC) encourages PDW submissions that explore ways
that promote discussions and debates on the scholarship of
teaching and learning, new approaches in pedagogy and in the
delivery of our courses (including technology) as well as
how management educators assess and evaluate learning and
the transferability of new knowledge. We welcome
submissions that allow for collaboration between divisions
that stimulate the cross-fertilization of ideas and
innovations that expand our thinking, allowing us to
envision new possibilities for our classrooms. |
